Small communities of winter fishing fans begin the annual rituals, as soon as the ice allows, on the various bays near coastal towns and villages. They set up their huts to catch smelts, or “l’éplan” as the Acadians say.
In good years and bad, smelt fishing and its cluster of huts are part and parcel of the Acadian landscape by the shore. The clear and present danger is always to do with the ice, since the ice supports the floor that supports the huts.
